Have you heard about the Priority Service Register? Or maybe you have and you’re not sure what it actually is? Well you’re in luck, we have prepared a short guide to shed some light on the service, detailing all that you need to know:
The Priority Service Register is a free support service that is provided by energy suppliers and network operators – the companies that maintain and manage the energy supply grid in your area – to you, the customer. This service can help assist vulnerable customers with communication, safety and access needs for their gas and electricity usage. It is important to be aware that each energy supplier is different and offer different ways of supporting their customers under their service package, some examples of these are:
- Conduct yearly gas safety checks.
- Advanced notification of planned power cuts.
- Identification scheme for home visits, this is where you can arrange a password or showing an agreed picture card on arrival with your network operator.
- Nominee scheme, this can be used to have your communications such as account statements, bills etc. sent to a nominated person such as a family member.
- Emergency support, this could involve the provision of alternative heating and cooking facilities if your energy supply is interrupted for a prolonged period.
- Meter reading services, your supplier may be able to read the meter at appropriate intervals.
If you think you would benefit from this type of support, then contact your energy supplier to check if you are eligible for this service. Some of the criteria that can determine whether you’re eligible are as follows:
- Pensionable age.
- Disabled or chronically sick.
- Long term medical condition.
- Hearing or visual impairment.
- In a vulnerable situation, this covers a range of situations, such as certain mental health conditions, living with children under five and other various conditions and circumstances.
If you fall under one of these categories, then the process of being added to the Priority Service Register is simple; contact your energy supplier online or over the phone and ask to be signed up to the service and discuss with them what they can offer to suit your needs.
Uncertain if you’re suitable to join the Priority Service Register? Then it is still recommended to contact your energy supplier, give them a detailed background of your situation so that they can determine your eligibility to qualify under this service.
