Air Source Heat Pump

⚠️ Before you read on: Replacing mains-gas heating with an Air Source Heat Pump is highly likely to increase your energy bills. Replacing other fuel types can reduce energy bills, however a home must be well-insulated, and consideration should be given to the cost of radiator replacement.

Air source heat pumps take heat from the outside air and use it to heat radiators or underfloor systems. They can function even when external temperatures are as low as -15C and provide both heat and hot water in the home.

Having a heat pump could eliminate the need for a traditional boiler because they run on electricity. However, bills may increase, so it’s important to check expected savings. If run on renewable energy, they can be very environmentally friendly.

Air Source Heat Pumps - Things to Consider

Installing an air source heat pump can cost around £8,000 to £13,000 (and can be more if most radiators require replacing).
Running costs will vary depending on a number of factors including the size of your home.
The more signficant bill savings occur when replacing an LPG or oil system. Replacing a gas system can result in an increase to bill costs.

Is your home suitable?

Check whether you need planning permission for ground source heat pumps, to check contact your local council's planning department.
Ensure that the walls and roof are well insulated before installing your air source heat pump to work efficiently.
You will need somewhere to put the unit outside the property, preferably against an open, south-facing wall.
Although they can work with radiators, the technology usually works best when using underfloor heating. Radiators will need to be upgraded to larger ones.
Consider the fuel you are replacing and the costs vs savings.
