Surrey Healthy Homes 2013

The Surrey Healthy Homes partnership, managed by Action Surrey continues to go from strength to strength as results illustrate from the funding awarded by the Department Of Health for the period from January to March 2013.

Thousands of Surrey residents contacted Action Surrey to get help and advice on how to keep their homes warm during the winter. Many were over 70; many were on benefits or with young children.

  • Over 3,500 homes were visited by energy advisors.

  • Over 550 home energy surveys were undertaken and Keep Warm Keep Well kits fitted comprising of small measures.

  • Over 400 referrals are to go forward for funding under ECO.

  • 70,000 pharmacy bags advertising help available were distributed through independent pharmacies.

  • 2,000 thermometers were handed out.

  • Over 23,000 low income vulnerable residents were mailed.

  • 21 grants were handed out by the community foundation for Surrey to local volunteer led community groups working to tackle isolation and support those in need, benefitting over 1,000 people. Furthermore, Voluntary Action South West Surrey established a pilot "community connectors" network, working with volunteers to reach isolated older people in North Guildford.

Keep Warm Keep Well Kits

Once again the Surrey Healthy Homes project, funded by the Department of Health, has been very successful providing Keep Warm Keep Well kits to vulnerable residents across Surrey. Currently more than 200 kits have been installed, which include draught excluders, letter boxes, carbon monoxide detectors and radiator reflector panels. Work to install at least another 150 Keep Warm Keep Well kits will continue over the next couple of months to ensure many more residents are helped in advance of next autumn.

Emergency Boiler Repairs

In addition to the Keep Warm Keep Well kits, 6 Local Authorities across Surrey have also funded 28 boiler services / repairs and over 30 boiler replacements to their most vulnerable residents. Many of these residents had very old, inefficient boilers which had been condemned and were unable to fund a replacement, leaving them without heating or hot water; including Mr Harris from Farnham, who had not had a functioning boiler or heating for 7 years.

ECO Grants and Funding

All homeowners living in solid wall properties and those in receipt of qualifying benefits may qualify for grants / funding for improvements such as solid wall insulation (houses typically build pre 1930) and replacement boilers.
