Get Paid For Generating Your Own Energy With The Renewable Heat Incentive

The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a financial scheme designed to encourage the take up of renewable heating among householders. It is suitable for all homes however those which are not connected to the gas network have the most opportunity to save on their fuel bills and decrease carbon emissions.

The scheme is available to homeowners, private landlords and self-builders who are newly installing ground, air and water source heat pumps; biomass boilers and stoves or solar thermal panels. Costs for installing these technologies start from £4000.

The tariff payable will be from 7.3p/kWh to 19.2 p/kWh per unit of heat generated for seven years, depending on the technology installed. The tariffs have been set at a level that reflects the expected cost of renewable heat generation over 20 years. Payments will be made on a quarterly basis.

Owners of renewable heating systems installed between 15th July 2009 and 9th April 2013 are able to apply to the scheme, provided they meet the eligibility criteria. These applications are known as 'legacy applications'.

All applicants are required to complete a Green Deal Assessment (GDA) and to ensure they meet minimum energy efficiency requirements of loft and cavity insulation where required by the GDA. Application for the RHI is a quick process provided all the information is to hand.

Surrey residents who are interested in the RHI should contact Action Surrey to clarify the full eligibility requirements and to be referred to Action Surrey’s trusted installer network.
