Reigate and Banstead

Your Low Carbon Community

While world leaders continue to debate environmental issues on a global scale, Reigate & Banstead Borough Council is tackling environmental issues locally. Here you can find what is happening in your local area and what your Council is doing.

The links on the left reveal case studies of Surrey homeowners who have transformed their house into a low carbon home, low carbon events in your area and low environmental volunteer groups should you wish to get involved locally.

Some of Reigate & Banstead Borough Council's local initiatives:

Scheme 1

Large scale repairs are those that cost over 3,000 and can be financed by either a capital release loan (over 75s only), interest only loan or capital and interest repayment loan. Eligibility and conditions apply. Works undertake include improvements to heating systems; damp proofing measures; provision of insulation measures.

Renewable Technology (Solar panels, heat pumps, biomass heating etc)

Electricity

The Feed-in Tariff is a scheme that will pay homeowners who install solar panels (or other renewable technology such as wind turbines) that generate clean electricity - for 25 years after you join the scheme. The payment is index linked and tax free.

Here's an example of how the feed-in tariff works with solar panels:

You install a 'large' domestic system (2.4kWp)

Cost (one-off):
£10,000-12,000

Money back (per year)
£150 (saving in electricity bill)
£30 (export tariff assumed to be 50% of your total generation which in this instance is 2000kWh)
£860 (generation tariff read off your generation meter paid at 43p/kWh of total generation)

£1040 Total annual financial benefit to you for generating your own clean electricity!

£26,000 Total financial benefit after the 25 years of the scheme

If you join the FIT scheme up to April 2012 you will get 43p/kWh (index linked to inflation) for 25 years. If you join after this time, you will get 37p/kWh (or 7% less) for 25 years, if you join the year after you get another 7% less of 37p/kWh and so on.

Grants are no longer available for solar panels or other renewable technology that generates electricity. The feed-in tariff is also available for wind turbines.

Heat

The Renewable Heat Incentive is a similar scheme to the Feed-in Tariff. It proposes to pay homeowners for generating renewable heat. Included under this scheme is solar hot water, heat pumps and biomass.

The RHI has not yet been settled but will see 'early adopters' of technology be given a 'Premium Heat Payment' (an upfront discount) and then from Autumn 2012 these people and others who install such technology will be paid for every kWh of heat they generate.

An example of how this could work would be:

You install solar hot water (4m2 or an average domestic system)

Cost
£4,100 (including a one-off Premium Heat Payment - which differs depending on technology)

Money back
£150 (saving on gas bill)
£170 (generation tariff which is 'deemed' or assumed on technology size - 2000kWh*8.5p)

£320 Total annual financial benefit to you for generating your own hot water

£6400 Total financial benefit after the 20 years of the scheme
