Grant Funding for the Private Rented Sector

Are you a landlord of a privately rented property? If so, you could be eligible for grant funding towards improving the energy efficiency of your rented property. By installing energy efficiency measures you can make your property more attractive to new tenants, reduce potential problems, like damp and increase the value of your property.

The eligibility criteria for grant funding towards energy efficiency measures for the private rented sector (PRS) is governed by the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard (MEES) Regulation. The MEES Regulation sets out the minimum energy efficiency standard of an Energy Performance Certificate band E for a privately rented property. Eligibility Criteria:

As a result, grant funding for the PRS is dependent on the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) energy efficiency rating of the property. The eligibility for private rented properties in Surrey is as follows:

1. The property falls into the PRS EPC rating for the energy efficiency measure wanting to be installed (see table below), and
2. The tenant falls into one of these categories:

• The tenant is in receipt of an eligible benefit, or
• Someone in the property has a vulnerability to the cold and the tenant receives a lower to medium income,

Vulnerability to the cold can include living with someone with a medical condition, with someone over the age of 65 or under the age of 5.

Please note that grant funding may not cover the full cost of the work and a contribution from the landlord may be needed.
