The UK's largest private photovoltaic system has been installed on the Glastonbury festival site, Worthy Farm. Installed on the cow shed the system consists of 1,116 photovoltaic panels!
The photovoltaic panels will generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 40 homes annually. The electricity generated will be used to power Worthy Farm with any excess energy being exported into the National Grid.
The owner of Worthy Farm, Mr Eavis, has always had aspirations to run a low carbon farm and with the introduction of the Feed-in-tariff, April 2010, it made the investment a viable option. It is predicted through the Feed-in-tariff Mr Eavis should have his money back within 9 years with the tariff paying £60,000 on an annual basis. Further to this Mr Eavis hopes that through producing his own electricity he can save around 100 tonnes of carbon a year.
In a recent interview Mr Eavis said "We've got the best festival in the world and the best solar power system in the country - so far. We've got to keep pushing, trying to do more."
