The proposed `Green Deal' scheme has been set up to assist homeowners in making their homes more energy efficient. This will be achieved through upfront costs for required improvements being funded through a `Green Bank'. Homeowners will then be able to payback these costs over a period of time.
Chris Huhne, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, has predicted that the `Green Deal' scheme could not only benefit UK residents through having a low carbon home but also will create 250,000 jobs by 2030. "Energy efficiency is a no brainer. We need to tap in to this huge market to save people money on fuel bills, save carbon and help the economic recovery."
Ian Marchant, the chief executive of Scottish and Southern Energy, one of Britain's "Big Six" energy suppliers has also commented "Consumers do not properly engage on energy, because we do not allow them to. That is not good for society and should change."
