Our findings from the Surrey Green Homes event 2011
The Surrey Green Homes 2011 report contains our findings from the recent `eco open homes' event held across Surrey over the weekend of 26th - 27th March 2011. The Surrey Green Homes consisted of 30 homeowners living in Surrey who opened their doors to the public to share their experiences of making their own homes more energy efficient and of having a renewable technology installed in their house.
The event was coordinated by Action Surrey - a local council partnership scheme, in partnership with transition groups, other local environmental volunteer groups and Guildford Borough Council. An overall target of having 25 participating homes was set and this was exceeded with having 30 households opening their doors.
Visitors were asked to make a pledge to make their house more energy efficient having seen a Surrey Green Home - if these were to be implemented this would equate to saving 442 lifetime tonnes of CO2. Action Surrey is aware of at least 5 solar photovoltaic installs and 8 requests for quotes. Survey respondents will be contacted again in 6 months to see whether their pledges have been converted into actions.
Over the two days, 295 people visited a Surrey Green Home and the main findings were:
80% of people would be more inclined to improve the energy performance of their house
97.7% people said they learnt something from the weekend.
The majority of visitors' understanding of renewable technology `improved significantly' having visited a property.
50% of visitors left with a different idea about what they could do/should do to improve energy efficiency than what they had in mind before visiting.
