On Monday 18th July the utility company launched a new scheme for their customers where they state they will "cut your bills and make your home energy efficient at no upfront cost".
The Home Energy Plan is a forerunner to the Governments Green Deal which is due to be launched in October 2012. British Gas are offering those customers who pay by direct debit the opportunity to have a surveyor establish areas of their property where energy savings could be made. In addition, the company is then offering to install these measures for free with the homeowner paying for the installation over 15 years through an increase in their utility bills.
However what British Gas fails to admit is that the reason why 1 in 5 households in the UK are now classified as fuel poor is due to them increasing the price of gas and electricity with just last month them announcing a price hike of 18% for gas customers and 16% for electricity.
With the Centre for Economics and Business Research showing in recent research that people who adopted simple energy saving measures on average saved £322 each year, and saw a 44% fall in their gas use between 2006 and 2010 it is clear that you can reduce your energy bills and combat the rises in energy prices.
