Free and easy heating wins
The temperatures have dropped yet again in Surrey, but there’s no need for your fuel bills to sky rocket. Action Surrey have put together a few tips to help you make the most of your heating, with instant results and without spending a penny. It’s a no brainer, right?
1. Unblock those radiators
Large pieces of furniture, especially sofas and beds close to radiators are stealing the heat you’re paying for. An easy test to see if your furniture is too close is to simply feel it. If a large area of it is warmer than the rest, then it’s too close and the heat is being wasted. When you can’t move the furniture completely away from the radiator, moving it any distance further from the heat source will help.
2. Set your thermostats and timers
Most modern central heating controls have a programmer function on them. Some are simpler than others with just an on/off timer, whereas some can set different temperatures for different times of the day.
Make sure your thermostat works to your schedule, so you are warm when you need to be and not paying for heating when you don’t. Between 18˚C and 21˚C is comfortable for most people. If you don’t know how to set your thermostat, send Action Surrey an email with the model of your thermostat and we will endeavour to find and send you a copy of the instructions.
Don’t forget your radiator controls too if you have them, these allow you to set different rooms at different temperatures and will turn the radiators off when the room has reached that temperature.
According to the Energy Saving Trust, correctly using a programmer, thermostat and radiator valves can save you £75 and 340kg of CO2 per year!
3. Bleed your radiators

Just remember to take safety precautions with hot surfaces, gases and liquids and don’t forget to check the pressure on the boiler is in the safe range afterwards.
