DECC 2050 `Pathways' Calculator to help cut carbon emissions.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) have announced their `pathways' calculator which allows homeowners and businesses to design and calculate their own energy policy.
It is hoped that this calculator will promote a vast change in both the public and business sector as for the first time they will be able to visually see how personal choices and choices on a large national scale will affect energy consumption. For example, the user will be able to see how much energy they will be able to save by simply changing from using their car to using public transport on a regular basis; or on a larger scale see how many wind turbines would be needed to be installed to allow the UK to continue consuming energy at its current rate.
Further to this, the calculator allows the user to compare the difference in energy consumption when a small reduction is made in all areas compared to when just one technology is focussed on.
The DECC currently plan for a second version of the calculator to be released in the autumn where a cost element to the calculator will also be added allowing the user to compare energy savings in relation to cost output.
